About the Ballet Class

Why Ballet for Adults?

If you mention attending a ballet class to adults the ususal responses are "You don't want me lumbering round in your class", "I can't dance!" or "I am too old" or " I'm not graceful enough". When in fact Adult Ballet is a highly effective and enjoyable form of exercise for a range of body shapes, varying fitness levels and ages. Ballet benefits the mind, body and soul whilst expressing yourself artisically. Think of it as pilates at the barre with repetitive choreographed exercises and expressive movement in the centre. This art form allows the individual to immerse themselves in the beauty of the music and enter another world for an hour or two whilst still enjoying the body benefits. All the classes are so welcoming to everyone and it can provide a lovely social occasion for many.

The benefits of ballet will:

  • Strengthen your back, abdominal muscles and enhance your overall core stability
  • Increase your suppleness and flexibility
  • Tone your muscles, giving you a lengthened feel, without bulking
  • Promote cardiovascular fitness
  • Make you aware of your spine with focus on correct posture and poise, family & friends will notice the improvements!
  • Improve your coordination and mental dexterity
  • Encourage grace, creativity, artistic expression and musical appreciation

What to expect from your first class

The class will begin with a gentle warm-up and stretch, followed by 35 to 40 minutes at the barre, 10 to 15 minutes of centre work, ending with a cool down and stretch.
Ballet barre work is designed to warm-up up the body progressively through a series of choreographed exercises; it lengthens, strengthens and stretches you throughout. It not only works the body but the mind too, as you concentrate on coordination and technique.
Centre work builds on the barre exercises putting simple steps together with poise and grace.
We all work together so you can relax knowing that no-one else in the class is watching you, apart from me!
There is such a great fun and friendly atmosphere in the class, we always welcome new members.

What do you need to participate?

Wear comfortable clothing to allow freedom of movement and layers which you can add or remove as the class progresses. Similar to something you would wear to a yoga or pilates class. Some people do wear leotard, skirt and tights but it is what you feel comfortable in that is important.

Ballet shoes can be purchased from Louise, just place an order at your first class and in the meantime wear socks for barre work and bare feet for centre work. Alternatively, you can order dancewear from http://www.dancedirect.co.uk/ or http://www.porselli.co.uk/ amongst other internet dancewear sites or go to a dancewear shop.

Remember to bring a water bottle.

About Louise Gould

I am a Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) trained and registered ballet teacher (RTS). I have danced for over 35 years, to an advanced standard and began teaching students in 2002. I hold an enhanced DBS and have Public Liability Insurance. I also have a BA (Hons) Business Studies and worked for E.on UK as a Trading Analyst for 15 years. Talk about career change!

In 2007 I started teaching Adult Ballet and have been overwhelmed by its popularity and success. It appears that the mix of toning, stretching and strengthening your body gracefully and musically is the key with particular attention to improving core stability.
I teach ladies who have never danced a step in their lives before, through to ladies who attended ballet classes to a vocational standard. The classes are designed to accommodate the needs and ability of the individual with an emphasis on feeling and developing correct technique.
Apart from the physical benefits, most people always comment that they have thought of nothing else whilst in the class. You can completely focus on yourself for a change!

I had no idea what to expect when I joined a year ago. I was introduced to everybody and was made welcome immediately. Louise demonstrates all of the dances. Ballet has improved my muscle tone no end. I thoroughly enjoy it and am very disappointed if I have to miss a class. Catherine aged 47
